Early Pregnancy Symptoms: When to Start Wondering

Early pregnancy symptoms are a concern for any woman during her childbearing years.  Whether you’re hoping you’re pregnant or you’re a little concerned, just about every woman has wondered at one point or another whether the strange cravings she’s been having or the breast tenderness that seemingly came out of nowhere are the first signs of a pregnancy.  There are few early warning signs that could mean that you are pregnant, though a pregnancy test, preferably given by your doctor, is the only real way to know whether or not a baby is on the way.

Every woman’s early pregnancy symptoms are different.  Some begin within days of conception, while others take a few weeks to develop.  Unfortunately, a lot of the symptoms are similar to those that occur right before menstruation, so it can be confusing to determine what is causing your symptoms at first.  These symptoms are strongest right after fertilization, and they taper off as the first trimester comes to a close.

Among the early pregnancy symptoms, nausea and vomiting during the morning hours is very common.  Breast tenderness increases, and the breasts may become tender and start to swell.  Frequent urination is also an early symptom of pregnancy.  Feeling tired is also a major symptom, since your body immediately begins going through major hormonal changes when you become pregnant.  Light bleeding may also occur, just around the time that menstruation usually happens.  This is caused by the implantation of the egg into the endometrial lining.  Some women also get heartburn as the swollen uterus begins pushing upward as it grows.  Constipation, irritability and heartburn are all other early pregnancy symptoms reported by women eight to ten days after fertilization has occurred.
