Which Stage of Pregnancy Are You In?

Each stage of pregnancy has its own specific symptoms and characteristics that are easily identifiable if you know what month of pregnancy you are in.  The course of your pregnancy is divided into three three-month sections called trimesters.  Each trimester has its own appropriate behaviors that should be followed to insure a healthy pregnancy.

The first stage of pregnancy is called the first trimester.  This lasts from conception to the end of the third month.  During the first trimester, common symptoms include frequent urination, breast tenderness, irritability, fatigue and sometimes constipation and heartburn.  You should have your first prenatal doctor visit during your first trimester.  During this visit, you will get a pelvic exam so the doctor can not the size and age of the fetus, and the doctor will conduct blood and urine tests to make sure you and your baby are healthy.

During the second stage of pregnancy, or the second trimester, your baby enters a phase of rapid growth.  You will also begin to gain quite a bit of weight.  It is during this trimester that you will begin to show.  You may begin feeling the baby move by the end of the trimester, making this an exciting period of your pregnancy.  You may also have more energy during this stage of pregnancy.  You may experience a flushed face, and begin to develop stretch marks or varicose veins.  Drinking plenty of fluids and engaging in mild exercise can help prevent varicose veins and help with circulation.

The third trimester or stage of pregnancy is the final stage before childbirth.  You will continue to gain weight during this time, and your moodiness and irritability may increase.  Your baby undergoes the most development during this stage.  By the last few weeks, he or she settles lower into the pelvis, getting ready for entering the birthing canal.
